About the ONE

The ONE ("Orchestrating Numeracy and the Executive") is a 12 week programme that aims to improve numeracy by combining executive and maths activities into a single programme in the year before children start school.

The programme was co-developed by a team of researchers in education and child development with help from insightful practitioners at early years settings in the Oxford area, funded by the Nuffield Foundation (learn more HERE). We are now assessing whether the ONE works at scale, with collaborators for the University of Sheffield, RAND Europe and Qa Research, supported by the Education Endowment Foundation and the Stronger Practice Hubs.
Executive functions are a set of skills such as inhibiting actions and distractions, holding information in mind and thinking flexibly, that we now know are all essential to early years numeracy skills. Teachers taking part are given 25 activities and resources to be used with the activities and asked to play three a week. The activities are play-based maths activities that each last between 5 and 10 minutes and integrate with everyday activities. During the first four weeks of the programme, staff will also be provided with weekly 30-minute face-to-face professional development sessions in their own settings, and at a time that suits the practitioner.
