Timeline

For all settings who have signed up, the ONE programme will start from Autumn term 2023.
Our evaluator team will visit all settings to carry out assessments with some of the children in October/November 2023 and again in May/June 2024. At the same time, we may ask a member of staff to complete some questionnaires or interviews.

We would like to understand whether the ONE programme is effective in improving maths outcomes for children compared to preschool education as usual.
For this reason, we will split the settings that have signed up for the programme into two groups:
an intervention group, who will receive the programme between January and April 2024;
and a waitlist control group, who will receive the programme in the academic year 2024-25.
All settings will be randomly assigned to a group in December 2023, making sure that the two groups are matched for some characteristics of the settings. You will not be able to choose which group your setting is assigned to.

Intervention group settings will be offered the 12-week ONE programme between January and April of 2024.
You will be given a pack of 25 fun activities and games which all have a maths focus. Throughout the 12 weeks of the programme, you will be asked to carry out 3 activities per week and provide feedback on those activities.
In addition to the activities, a research delivery team member will visit your setting to deliver a set of four weekly professional development sessions for the first four weeks of the programme (in January or February 2024). You will receive a phone call in week 8 and again in week 12 to provide feedback on the programme.
We may also carry out an observation at your setting in the first week of the programme and interviews with room leaders towards the end of the programme. This will allow us to understand how our programme works across different types of settings.
